1. Project Name
Strengthening Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) at Banadir, Daynile and De-Martine public Hospitals, Somalia
2. Project Description
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global threat, responsible for an estimated 8.22 million per year.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health threat in Somalia, compounded by unregulated antimicrobial use, limited diagnostic capacity, and weak infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. Banadir, Daynile and De-Martine Hospitals serve large populations with high infectious disease burdens but currently lack structured AMS programs. Implementing AMS in these facilities will reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to national AMR control efforts.
3. Project Goal
To establish functional, sustainable Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programs at Banadir, Daynile and De-Martine Hospitals to optimize antimicrobial use and curb the spread of AMR.
Project Core Activities
- Guideline Development
- Develop hospital-specific treatment protocols for: UTI, sepsis, and surgical prophylaxis.
- Data Collection
- Conduct manual audits and Point Prevalence Surveys (PPS) in the absence of digital systems.
- Surveillance
- Collect and report antimicrobial resistance trends from microbiology labs to clinicians.
- Training & Behaviour Change
- Provide regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions.
- Conduct bedside mentorship to support rational prescribing.
- Run awareness campaigns for staff and patients on responsible antimicrobial use.
- Evaluation & Reporting
- Produce annual reports for hospital boards and stakeholders including:
- Antibiotic use trends
- Resistance patterns
- AMS interventions and outcomes
Collaborators
- Midrar Institute of Public Health (MIPH)-Somalia
- Specialized Programme for Infectious Disease Care Everywhere (SPICE) Radboud University Medical Center (Radboudumc) in the Netherlands.
6. Expected Outcomes
- Reduced inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions.
- Improved adherence to treatment guidelines.
- Enhanced infection prevention integration.
- Increased awareness among healthcare workers.
Sustainability
- Integrate AMS activities into hospital policies and routine practices.
- Train local trainers to continue education and mentorship beyond project duration.
